We had someone catch the disc on the goal line. The ruling was that the goal line is not a part of the goal area and play should resume. What are the thoughts?

The call on the field was correct. The goal line is part of the 'playing field proper' and is not part of the endzone.
From the 11th Edition Rules (http://www.upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th#III)
III. Playing Field
A.The standard field of play is a rectangular area with dimensions as shown on the accompanying diagram (see Appendix 1).
B.The playing field proper is the playing field excluding the end zones.
C.The goal lines separate the playing field proper from the end zones and are part of the playing field proper.
So, catching a disc while touching the goal line, straddling the goal line, etc. does not constitute a score and play continues. This is counter to the sideline rules where the sideline is not part of the playing field proper and represents the out-of-bounds area.
Happy hucking.
