Updated Spirit System and Summer FDM

There are two changes of note that will be part of the 2009 Summer Leagues.  A new Spirit of the Game system and a new Fair Deciding Mechanism.

A new spirit survey has been implemented to encourage exceptional Spirit of the Game in WODS leagues.  This new system is based on the spirit system developed as a joint project between the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) and the Beach Ultimate Lovers Association (BULA).  This new system will have a spirit score maximum of 16 but it is intended that a team with average spirit will achieve an average score of 8.  Team captains are encouraged to give out spirit scores that average to between 8 and 10 over the season and to only hand out scores of 16 to their very best spirited game of the season, if at all.  In addition, captains will have the opportunity to report Spirit Highlights which will be posted in a public forum on this site and will be used to determine the team which will be the winner of the Summer Spirit Prize, to be awarded at the end of the summer.  The new survey is outlined in the Leagues Handbook.

A second addition to the leagues handbook is a page which describes the rules modifications specific for WODS ultimate for each league.  The rules for the coming Summer season are included in this document.  One rule of note which is new for this season is the addition of the FDM, or "Fair Deciding Mechanism".  This rule replaces the traditional disc flip at the begining of the game with a tally of the number of hydrocarbon powered vehicles each team used to get to the game and awards the first decision to the team with the lowest tally.  For further details, check out the WODS specific rules page in the Leagues Handbook.  The FDM was created in an attempt to mitigate the issue of limited parking at Kiwanis Park and to limit the number of vehicles we drive through that community.
