Liquid

History

Liquid was formed in 2004 by Daniel Gelinas and Onita Basu. Tryouts were held, and a roster of mostly Waterloo based players was selected. The team surprised itself with a strong placing at the Northern Flights tournament, and seized the opportunity presented by an unfilled bid to Nationals in Vancouver. Nationals the first year was a learning experience, with many strong halves, none of them in the same game until the last game against Toronto rival Rotterdam, which Liquid won 9-0.

The team learned a lot from its Nationals debut and practiced through the fall and winter. Leadership was passed to Yaacov Iland and the 2005 season began. Buzz from the Nationals appearance increased the crowd at tryouts and a less experienced but more athletic team was formed. Highlights for the season included beating top Ontario teams Bombing Madd Fatties and Bodhi at the Northern Flights tournament. Liquid qualified for Nationals through a wild-card spot, and won four of its nine games in Winnipeg to place 10th.

In 2006, the development program began paying dividends as six Quicksand players made the jump to Liquid. The team had a strong season opener, winning the May Day tournament, and continued its success with a third place finish at Northern Flights. A fourth place finish at Regionals meant that Liquid qualified for Nationals without a wild-card for the first time. Competition in Halifax was tough, with a two point loss to Spawn in the first game being the deciding factor to put Liquid in the 9-16 pool. The team ran the pool, finishing 9th, with an over .500 record for the first time at Nationals.

In 2007, Liquid leadership passed to Justin Lee, assisted by Neenah Navasero and Duane Chris. With Nationals in Toronto and 2008 being a World's qualifying year, the field was much stronger than usual. Liquid lost an upset to Les Bouettes in pool play and missed the chance to play in the top eight. The team eventually finished tenth overall. In fall 2007, a team evaluation process lead to major changes, including a move to a larger captaining structure.

Liquid 2008 was captained by Neenah Navasero, Justin Lee, Matt Snow, Lenny Scott, Yaacov Iland and Bryanne Root. The team drew players from a wider area than previously and had a strong first half of the season culminating in a second place finish at Northern Flights. Ontario Regionals were held in Waterloo, and Liquid faltered, losing a close game to Mayhem and finishing fourth overall. The team redeemed itself at Nationals, moving into the top eight and losing a universe point quarterfinals match-up against Montreal's RIP before closing out the tournament with two wins over regional rivals Big Hammers and Monster to finish fifth in the Nation and first out of Ontario.
